Stoner Crushers' owners allege harassment

KATHUA, Apr 25: The Stone Crusher Owners Association Jammu province today alleged that Geology and Mining Department is harassing the stone crushers.
In a meeting held here today under the chairmanship of the association's president Choudhary Vikram Randhawa, the members discussed and debated various burning issues pertaining to the Jammu province stone crushers and highlighted their problems.
Speaking on the occasion, Randhawa accused the Geology and Mining Department of harassing the stone crushers by not providing tender to local contractors.
He further said that Geology and Mining Department also gave tenders at higher rates and that too was allotted to contractor of Punjab. Randhawa alleged that the Geology and Mining Department virtually tried to seal Ravi area to Punjab contractors as they illegally lifted huge quantity of raw material from Ravi areas. He informed that DC Kathua recently ordered a ban on the illegal lifting of raw material from the Ravi River but still tonnes of material continued to be lifted from the Ravi by contractors of Punjab from the area which is within Jammu.
Randhawa also accused J&K Pollution Control Board of harassing the stone crushers of Jammu of not providing NOC on time. He mentioned that stone crushers have to wait for months together to get NOC from the department.
'On one hand Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasized to promote the local industries in Jammu and Kashmir, but if such harassment continued, how the words of Chief Minster will see the light of the day', he mentioned
He alleged that J&K Pollution Control Board has given permission to one outsider stone crushers in Kathua to set up unit three years back which badly affected the local stone crushers. He questioned that how one outsider or a non state subject holder had established its unit in Kathua.
Randhawa on the occasion assured the members that he will work for the betterment of the association and will work hard in sorting out the problem being faced by stone crushers in Jammu province. He also sought support and cooperation from the members of the association.
Later, a deputation of Stone Crushers met Member of Parliament Lal Singh and apprised him about the problem being faced by the Stone Crushers of Jammu. MP gave patient hearing and assured the members of Stoner Crushers Owners Association Jammu province that he will take this matter with the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah so that local contractors and crushers will get priority for the purpose.
