New Delhi , Apr 25: There's nothing like philanthropy to get even the elusive among the power and glam circles to make a public appearance.
And when the host of a do like that is Payal Abdullah, wife of J&K CM Omar Abdullah, you can be sure that the cause is going to get some very powerful, very glam supporters! Industrialists, diplomats, politicians and Bollywood stars all made an appearance on the Red Carpet at this big bash in Delhi over the weekend. Speaking at the function, Payal said, "We are happy to have the presence of so many people at this gathering. Our donors, supporters and well-wishers are all present here. This is a special evening organised to raise money, with love and hope, for the education of the underprivileged. Furthermore, to improve the lives of the children, we will provide a monthly allowance to support their school expenses. The funds have been effectively deployed, with particular emphasis on single parents and orphans. Our organisation is committed to using education to empower the helpless poor and marginalised in India. We believe that education is a fundamental method of social progress and reform." Omar added, "It is basically an effort to thank all the people who have supported, for years, the organisation that my wife Payal started five years ago in the immediate aftermath of the 2005 earthquake. The organisation has evolved since then to its present stature. We tried to help underprivileged children and raise funds to make a difference to their lives. Although its geographical focus is the state of Jammu and Kashmir, its purpose knows no boundaries and is underpinned by general altruism."
STAR ATTRACTION: Among those on the Red Carpet was Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit, who was welcomed by Payal and Omar. Of course, Mollie and Farooq Abdullah, and Zahir and Zamir, Payal and Omar's children, were there too. Sanjay Dutt was there, unaccompanied by Mrs Dutt, Manyata, but accompanied by buddy Bunty Walia. About his presence there, Sanjay said, "It's a special occasion and I wanted to be a part of it. I'm always there for a good cause, and this function was a cause-related function for children. So I just couldn't say no. And, of course, Omar has been an old friend and it was very kind of him to remember me on this occasion." In response to that, Omar replied, "Sanjay is a friend of mine. We were in the same school. He was my senior. We've known each other for years now. He has always been supportive of any initiative, particularly in Kashmir, and when he heard that we were having this get-together, he said to me, 'I have to be at the function.' And here is!"
