Udhampur, Apr 25: Drug abuse poppy straw is rising at an alarming rate among the youths in the Udhampur district as the government sponsored schemes of anti-drug abuse campaign and police fail to control menace and the number of drug addicts is increasing day by day.
New drug patterns particularly the flow of Poppy straw (Bukki) has been increasing at an alarming rate in the last two years and is harming the social order of the district . Poppy Straw (Bukki) ,Charas, Gutkha , are increasingly becoming the drugs of choice among youth,here as these are easily available at local tea stalls. It is pertinent to mention that a large amount of drug particularly Charas and Poppy straw are being brought here by peddlers from valley and adjoining Doda district .
According to information the district Police has seized a large amount of Poppy Straw , and Charas, during checking on Jammu Srinager highway from Patnitop to Tikri and has detained drug peddlers haling from valley , Doda and Punjab in connection with drug business but drugs worth several lakhs are still getting into the district daily from valley and Doda district and valley and police is yet to evolve a comprehensive strategy for combating the growing drug menace in the district despite being informed number of times by citizens and Ngos during police public meets here .
Anil Paba a social worker and Parvesh Kumar of SRCO Ngo has expressed great concern that youth belonging to lower age groups are being initiated into drug abuse in city . They alleged that police failed to control menace as popular drug Poppy straw being used by majority of youths here is easily available on tea stalls by spending twenty to fifty rupees and no one is check to control it .
On the condition of anonymity not to disclose his name a local Shiv Nager resident and a drug addict disclosed that there are some main peddlers who brought contraband from Valley and further sublet it in local market and he along with other friend get it as per capacity ranging from twenty to fifty rupees at local tea stalls .He added that we are not worried about police as those who sell it are in nexus with local police and some of the police personals himself use it and buy from local market. He alleged that Bukki is easily available in Bus stand , Shiv Nager and slain talab , Birma bridge areas from local tea stalls .
He added that the reason why youth are not afraid of police is that number of some police personals who have been assigned duty to control menace are himself in its grip and some of them are found using it on tea stalls with other drug addicts many times .
Local resident has demanded that special patrolling by police is needed to check menace within city to check drug addiction to save youths from it specially in main points of city .Government sponsored schemes of anti-drug abuse campaign should be also implemented by District administration practically.
