| Gujjars seek inclusion of Gojri into 8th Schedule | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 25: Seeking immediate intervention of state government for inclusion of Gojri into the eighth schedule of Indian constitution, the Gujjars and Bakerwals of Jammu and Kashmir today said that their tribal language deserves more constitutional safeguards and on merit should be inducted into the list of official languages of India as being an ancient language of South Asia, it requires urgent preservations and indispensable propagations on priority. In a social gathering of Gujjars organised by Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation-a frontal organisation of Gujjars, held here, the community members impressed upon state and union government to "be fair and just" with them and stressed upon both to initiate instantaneous steps for inclusion of Gojri into the list of Indian languages. Dr Javaid Rahi, Secretary of Tribal Foundation, while speaking on the occasion stated that the demands by various organizations of Gujjars for the inclusion of Gojri is still pending with the union government since 1991 which is adversely affecting development of tribal culture of Gujjars. He impressed upon the Gujjars residing in more than 11 states of India to chalk out a common plan and struggle unitedly for inclusion of Gojri in Indian constitution, as this language has played an iconic role in construction of our distinct tribal identity. Dr Rahi said that Gojri has a strong case for its inclusion in the list of official languages as in the light of the recommendations of the Sitakant Mohapatra Committee constituted by the government of India to examine the cases of 38 languages recommended by various authorities for inclusion in 8th schedule of Indian constitution, is most deserving language of India to be categorized under constitution. As a vibrant languages of India - Gojri has been recognised as a Tribal language of India by the National Academy of Letters viz "Sahitya Academy", said Rahi adding "Gojri is one of the ancient languages of India," Well documented works of the historians have traced the origin and practice of Gojri language since BC era. It further revealed that noted saint scholar and Hindi-Persian poet of thirteenth century Amir Khusroo formally made a mention of Gojri language in the list of eighteen major Indian languages of his time. Researchers and historians are of considered opinion that Gojri language is the mother of Rajasthani, Gujrati Urdu and Haryanvi Languages. The speakers said that the state government has already recognized Gojri by including it in the 6th Schedule of the constitution and it is the aspiration of millions of people who want that due credit should be given to this ancient language which is serving our motherland for centuries together. After Kashmiri and Dogri both included in the 8th Schedule, Gojri is third largest spoken languages in Jammu and Kashmir State.
