| VC of CU: Are authorities deliberately playing with fire? | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 25: Reports in a section of the press suggest that the concerned authorities have finally decided to ignore the Jammu sentiments and appoint former Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University, Prof Amitabh Mattoo, as Vice-Chancellor of Central University in Jammu. The reports, if correct, would mean that the authorities have no regard whatever for the sentiments of the people of Jammu, who have been urging the President of India and Union Human Resources Development Minister to appoint a Jammu-based academician as Vice-Chancellor of the Central University, which was sanctioned for this province after the Jammu-based organizations, including student organizations, upped their ante and threatened a mass movement in case their demand was not accepted. According to a report, the authorities would issue the necessary orders tomorrow (Monday). It is a well known fact that almost all the Jammu-based organizations, barring Congress, NC, PDP and BJP, have been expressing their resentment against the reported decision of the authorities to appoint a non-Jammuite as Vice-Chancellor of the Central University for the last about one month. They have been warning the authorities that they would oppose tooth and nail the decision of the authorities and “not allow any outsider Vice-Chancellor to function”. The need of the time was to pay heed to the sentiment as expressed by the Jammu-based organizations and appoint a Jammu-based academician as Vice-Chancellor of Central University. That the authorities have decided otherwise only shows they are out to provoke the people of Jammu to take recourse to activities that may create serious law and order problems in Jammu province. The people of Jammu province would not take this decision kindly. This is what the activities undertaken by them during the past one month clearly suggest. The bottom line of all these activities is that consider the appointment of “an outsider, including someone from Kashmir” as an insult to the Jammu-based teaching community as well as the people of Jammu province. There is still time for the authorities to review their decision and appoint a Jammuite as Vice-Chancellor of Central University. Such an action on their part would not only be helpful for the NC-Congress coalition government, which is already facing innumerable problems, but would also send a positive signal that the authorities do not discriminate between the people of Kashmir and people of Jammu province. Any approach other than this would surely result into widespread protests in Jammu. Confrontation is avoidable and it must be avoided. It can be avoided only if the authorities adopt a positive approach towards the people of Jammu province, who have not only been opposing the reported decision but also demanding “inquiry against Prof Amitabh Mattoo” on various grounds. |
