| Traffic restored on Sgr-Leh NH | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Apr 25: Srinagar-bound vehicles stranded on the road were this afternoon allowed to move towards their destination after the highway, the only road linking frontier region of Ladakh with rest of Jammu and Kashmir, was partially cleared, officials said. They said efforts were on to restore two-way traffic. The arterial road, considered the lifeline of Ladakh, was closed for vehicular traffic on April 19 following heavy snowfall at the 11.578 feet high Zojila pass, only three days after it was opened for traffic after remaining closed for nearly six months. This time the highway was opened for vehicular traffic a month ahead of schedule due to efforts of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), which maintains the road. Leh and Kargil bound vehicles would be allowed to move on the road by tomorrow, the officials said. Meanwhile, the high altitude areas of Leh experienced fresh snowfall yesterday, prompting authorities to suspend air traffic. Leh alongwith the famous south Kashmir hill resort of Pahalgam, 100 km from here, was the coldest place in Jammu and Kashmir where the night temperatures settled at 2.0 degrees Celsius. Kargil, also in Ladakh region, was the second coldest place at a minimum of 3.2 degrees Celsius. However, the night temperature rose in most parts of the valley including Srinagar where it was 7.4 degrees Celsius. Kupwara in North Kashmir recorded a low of 7.2 degrees Celsius followed by Kokernag and Qazigund in South at 6.5 and 5.0, respectively, the Met Office said. The day and night temperature witnessed a dip across Kashmir and Ladakh region in view of moderate to heavy snowfall in the high altitude areas and incessant rains in the plains last week. However, it was bright day yesterday which provided much needed relief to the residents as well as the tourists. Jammu city recorded a minimum of 21.8 degrees Celsius today, making it the hottest place in the state. Katra, the base camp for the pilgrims visiting Vaishno Devi shrine, was the second hottest place with a low of 18.8 degrees Celsius followed by Batote (11.3), Banihal (9.4) and Bhaderwah (7.6).
