| 3 yrs on: No honour for state awardees | | | ARTEEV SHARMA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 25: The wait for sixty persons excelling in different fields, who were selected for the state awards during the past three years, is stretching long as the State government seems to have either forgotten their deeds having recognized as heroics to be honoured by it or deliberately lingering to buy time to do the same in leisure. Such is the state of affair that one of the awardees himself being the member of the system followed by the government for the honour admits “irresponsibility” of the administration as one of the only factor behind the “mismanagement”. Ahmadullah Shah, who is among those selected for the award, is Special Secretary to the government in the General Administration Department (GAD) that finalises the awards. Shah said that his name was also announced for the awards but treads cautiously and safely saying, “The government may soon confer the award on all who are in the list.” Official sources maintained that these awards are generally conferred on Republic Day celebrations but the state government has not conferred these awards upon those persons who have been selected for excelling in different fields. “The government has been announcing the names of state awardees for the last three years, but the awards were not conferred upon these awardees since then,” maintained sources. The awardees include a cricketer and member of the Delhi Daredevils in Indian Premier League (IPL), Mithun Minhas, who belongs to Jammu. His name was announced for the state award in the year 2008 and his name is eleventh in the list of persons for the awards. Mitali, 19, christened as ‘Wonder Girl’ among Jammu sports fraternity for being the first female athlete to be competing on the international arena, has also been selected for state award. She has also become an instant cynosure with all eyes intent on her upcoming ventures as stakes have been heavily loaded on her to clinch the coveted medal. This ‘wonder girl’ is also ardently waiting for honour to an award which was announced in her name almost one and half years back. Sources revealed that the awards for the years 2008, 2009 and 2010 were yet to be presented although these have already been announced. 17 persons, including 3 women and 14 men excelling in 7 different fields, who included life time achievement for literature, performing arts, outstanding sports persons, outstanding media persons, outstanding environmentalists and meritorious public service were selected for the award in 2009. A cash award of Rs 51000 was announced by the GAD to Ahmadullah Shah along with a medal and a citation. The General Administration Department in the secretariat has yet to send a formal invitation to the awardees for the function. The name of Lalit Magotra, who is the president of Dogri Sanstha and a retired professor from University of Jammu, was also in the list for award for the literature category for 2009. Magotra says that the government was not at all serious in promoting such people who excel in their respective fields “as a result these people get discouraged.” Deputy Secretary GAD, Shahid Saleem said the awardees for the year 2008, 2009 and 2010 would soon be conferred upon the persons who have excelled in their respective field.”
