JAMMU, Apr 26: Urdu Development Council (UDC) Jammu and Kashmir has expressed concern over "deplorable" condition of Urdu language in the state despite its state's official language status.
Talking to media persons, Sheikh Abdhur Rehman, former MP and president of the organization said that the council met the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at his official residence and presented a memorandum regarding the present "deplorable" condition of the Urdu language in the State despite being its official language status. "Urdu is not only the official language of the State but also a link language among various regions of the State which have their own local languages and dialects. "The delegation suggested that the study of Urdu language should be made compulsory up to matriculation level, Urdu university and Urdu academy be set up in the State, official business should be translated in Urdu, all advertisements should be issued in Urdu, fulfillment of vacant lying posts in Urdu subjects, state calendars, diaries pens and stationary items should carry the names of issuing department in Urdu department, Urdu text book board should be constituted, KAS and other competitive examinations should be conducted through Urdu medium, teachers with adequate knowledge of Urdu Language should be appointed in the government Schools and colleges for teaching Urdu Language, all degrees issued by the State Universities should be both in Urdu and English languages," Zahoor-ur- din said.
