| Pakistan adept in twisting facts | | | Islamabad seems to be adept in twisting facts. It has the expertise to change the labels while trying to sell its brand of politics. This became evident when the Pakistan Foreign spokesman,Abdul Basit, told Indian mediamen in Islamabad the other day that Pakistan will never accept Indian claim that the "indegenous freedom movement in Kashmir is a terrorist struggle."He even condemned India for labelling happenings in Kashmir as a terrorist struggle saying that such a thing will not be accepted by Pakistan. This means that militants operating in Kashmir are the state subjects of the valley and those foreign mercenaries, most of them Pakistanis, who were killed and arrested, many among them languishing in jails in Jammu and Kashmir, had come to the scenic valley as tourists and not as terrorist.Over the years the successive Governments in Islamabad would not hesitate telling the world that they were providing moral and dipoomatic support to the so called freedom fighters.Has Abdul Basit taken the pains of studying the operation Topac, that had been framed during the regime of Gen.Ziaul Haq?Had he done so he would become wiser by the details of the operation under which Kashmiri boys were assisted in crossing over to Pakistan and occupied Kashmir for arms training. That the Pakistani soldiers and senior officers of the ISI imparted training to these boys in the handling of assault rifles and in planting IEDs and hurling hand grenades from 1986 onwards is no longer a secret. When militancy took roots in Kashmir in 1989 the police force had no assault rifles in its armoury.Where did the Kashmiri boys get AK-47 and AK-56 assault rifles ?Where did they get plastic bombs, hand grenades and other explosives, especially the RDX ?They got all these weapons and ammunition from agencies acorss the border.Official fiogures reveal that the number of foreign mercenaries killed in Jammu and Kashmir has been on the higher side than the local boys.Has Basit read the reports dating back to 1989 and 1994 when terrorists not only from Pakistan but from Afghanistan besides some other terrorist infested countries had sneaked into Jammu and Kashmir and were killed in operations launched by the Indian security forcees.Basit needs to be told that 80 per cent of the infiltrators from across the LOC have been found to be non-Kashmiris.Assuming that the current turmoil in Kashmir is indegenous why does not Pakistan initiate measures for checking militants from infiltrating into Jammu and Kashmir? And experts are of the opinion that if the level of infiltration of militants from across the LOC touched zero Kashmir will be free of any turmoil. And in such a situation one will have no doubt about Pakistan's involvement.Basit has fired another howler while talking to the Indian media. He has said that why does India seek action against Hafiz Mohd.Saeed when Delhi has not initiated any action against Chief of Shiv Sena,Bal Thackery?Well Basit would have been correct in his assessment had Bal Thackery been involved in bomb explosions in Islamabad,or Rawalpindi or Karachi. He has not been involved in any such gruesome act.Against this Delhi has conveyed to Islamabad on more than one occasion that Hafiz Mohd.Saeed,as Lashkar-i-Toiba Chief, has been involved in engineering the Mumbai mayhem.Without holding any brief for Bal Thackery, who is dubbed as a fundamentalist and a reactionary,it would be a travesty of truth if he is equated with Hafiz Saeed. What seems to have annoyed Delhi is the way Basit has demanded immediate resumption of the composite dialogue without telling anything about Pakistan's response to India's repeated demand for strong action against the perpetrators of the Mumbai carnage and the one related to adequate steps Islamabad needed to take to ensure than soil of Pakistan was not used for exporting terrorism to India. |
