| 18 new colleges for JK | | Minister hints to start short term courses in colleges | | EARLY TIMES REPORT RAJOURI, Apr 27: State government has planned to open one Women Degree College at each district headquarter of the state besides central government has reportedly okayed 18 new degree colleges for the state. Sources said that Union Minister for Human Resource Development has cleared a list of 18 new degree colleges to be opened at various places in the state. Sources added that J&K government is also planning to establish one Women Degree College at each district headquarters in the state. There is also a proposal with the higher education department for starting some new courses particularly short term and vocational courses in various degree colleges. During his one day tour to border district of Rajouri, Minister for Higher Education Abdul Gani Malik admitted with Early Times that government is going to open 18 new colleges in the state which will be opened in those areas where the need is most urgent. He, however, said that prior to the opening of new institutions, they are concentrating more to provide better facilities in the existing colleges. Minister said "We are more serious to provide best facilities in the existing colleges". He added that they are in the process of opening such colleges but it will take some more time.Minister also admitted that they are planning about opening of women degree colleges in the state. Malik said that due to already expansion of colleges, quality of education was hit and now they have firstly started to match up and standardize education in these colleges. Replying a query, he said that his department has already initiated a process of starting some vocational programmes in the colleges. "It is the need of the hour and we have to produce skilled people from colleges", he said adding that the proposal is under consideration and they have written to various colleges for proposing the courses to be started in these colleges. "We will soon start these short term programmes in the colleges", he added
