| EP tenants' leaders differ over settlement of issues | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 27: Difference of opinions cropped up over the evacuee property tenants' claims as the patron of the association and senior PDP leader Shanti Devi's high profile gratitude to Minister for Relief and Rehabilitation Raman Bhalla for settling the issues of the tenants turned out be fluke only with nothing apparent having done on papers. "This is just another hoax that has come to be served upon the gullible tenants of the custodian property who are fighting for the legal rights and every time are made scapegoats by the ministerial influences practiced by their advertisers," said Mohd Shrief, secretary of Evacuees Property Tenants Welfare Society told reporters at the sidelines of the press conference held here today by the higher ups to the society. While patron, chairman and president of the society welcomed the decision of Minister for Revenue and Relief, the secretary differed over the statement, saying "it was another attempt to deceive the poor tenants. Why tenants pay tax to the government if they have to spend money on renovation of the buildings in which they are living?" "The government has imposed various hidden taxes which would be impossible for EV tenants to pay on monthly basis. The government should either review the decision or take all EV tenants into confidence before any decision," Shrief said. Earlier, addressing media persons, Krishan lal Gupta, chairman of the society said, "Our society was fighting for the last 18 years for the genuine demands of poor EP tenants. Raman Bhalla has declared that no permission or premium required for any sort of repairs, forty years lease for commercial properties and twenty years lease for residential properties which were being given previously for one to five years only. We welcome the bold decision of the Minister." "Bhalla also assured to make necessary amendments in the EP Act to increase the lease to forty years for residential houses and to give lease hold rights to all the tenants," he maintained. In her address, Shanti Devi, patron of the society said, "By fixing the norms of transferring the tenancy without any premium in blood relations cases and charging Rs 100 per sq ft for residential houses and Rs 150 for commercial properties will at least minimize corrupt practices prevailing in the department." Bansari Dass Angral president of the society said that eight percent development charges in cases or addition and altercations will help the tenants to raise the required accommodations as per their family needs for which permission will be given within twenty one days. But in cases of people, below poverty line, handicapped, widows and cancer patients there will be no development charges.
