| Academy remembers Mian Deedo | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 27: The Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages and Mian Deedo Memorial Committee, Jammu collectively organised a function in honour of late Dogra hero Mian Deedo on his 231st birth anniversary here today. Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Finance, Abdul Raheem Rather, who attended the function as chief guest, paid rich tributes to Mian Deedo and said that the Cultural Academy should collect folk songs on Deedo and compile them for posterity. "It would be great if the Cultural Academy collects folk songs on Mian Deedo and compiles them as this would help in writing literature on the Dogra hero," Rather said. Noted journalist, writer and convenor of Mian Deedo Memorial Committee, Balraj Puri said much the same. "Although attempts were made to delete Deedo's heroics from history, he remained alive through local folklore," Puri said, adding, "The Cultural Academy should try to collect Deedo centric folk songs so that the current and future generations could know something about the Dogra legend". Earlier in his welcome address, Secretary Cultural Academy, Zafar Iqbal Manhas said that persons like Deedo lived for others and left legacies behind them. "Mian Deedo was a great man and a person of strong character. He lived for others. That is why people still remember him," Zafar said. The function was presided over by Prof Zahoor-ud-Din, former HoD Urdu, Jammu University. In his presidential address, Prof Zahoor-ud-Din called upon the audience to follow in the footsteps of late Deedo. "I must congratulate both Cultural Academy as well as Mian Deedo Committee for organising such a function. This was the need of the hour," Zahoor said, adding, "We must follow in the footsteps of Mian Deedo". As part of the event a poetic recitation and a musical programme were also organised. The segment began with poetic recitation wherein ND Jamwal, Randhir Singh Raipuria, and Pradhuman Singh Jindrahia recited their verses which were purely dedicated to Mian Deedo. This was followed by a musical bonanza wherein Preshet Dev Singh, Nirbhey Singh Salathia, Chanchal Sharma, Bishan Dass, and Pradhuman Singh sang songs on the life of the late Mian Deedo.
