| Editor 'Roshni' Aziz Kashmiri passes away | | | SRINAGAR: Kashmir's seniormost journalist, 91-year-old Aziz Kashmiri, passed away tonight at SMHS Hospital after prolonged illness. He breathed his last at 2030 hours. His body was carried to his Rawalpora residence. Preparations were underway late tonight for his funeral tomorrow. Large number of people from all walks of life called on the bereaved family to pay their condolences. Born in Srinagar on June 10th, 1919, Aziz Kashmiri had joined as a sub editor and reporter of Advocate Maulvi Mohammad Abdullah's Urdu weekly 'Al-Barq' at young age of 19 years in 1938. Later he worked for 'Khalsa Gazette'. While carrying out his activities as a freedom fighter, he launched his own fortnightly 'Roshni' in 1943. It was turned into a weekly within a few years. Since 1977, 'Roshni' has been regularly publishing as an Urdu daily from Srinagar. While Kashmiri continued as the vernacular daily's printer, publisher and founder editor, his son, Zahoor Ahmed, has been working as its editor since 1988. Much more than his newspaper, Aziz Kashmiri was famous for three of his books---particularly one that claimed Jesus Christ was buried at Rozbal in Srinagar downtown locality of Khanyar and his tomb was existing there. Most of the researchers, however, did not agree with Kashmiri as they believed it was the tomb of a different saint Yus Asaph, also known as Jesus of Kashmir. Aziz Kashmiri is the third most prominent journalist Kashmir has lost in the last five months. Founder-editor and publisher of influential Urdu daily, Sofi Ghulam Ghulam Mohammad, and a father figure of journalism in Jammu & Kashmir, Khwaja Sonaullah Bhat, had both passed away in November, 2009. For over 50 years, Khwaja worked as printer, publisher and editor of Urdu daily 'Aftab' and maintained its distinction of being the state's most influential newspaper for over 30 years. In a statement, Speaker of Legislative Assembly, Mohammad Akbar Lone, paid rich tributes to late Aziz Kashmiri and called him as a doyen of the Urdu journalism in Jammu & Kashmir. He said that Aziz Kashmiri had suffered a great deal in the freedom struggle and had played a key role in highlighting the peoples problems while himself living a simple and unassuming life. An official spokesman said that a condolence meeting was held here today under the chairmanship of Director Information, Kh. Farooq Ahmad Renzu, to express deep sorrow and grief over the demise of Chief Editor Daily Roshni, Ab Aziz Roshni, in which all the officers and officials of the State Information Department participated. Highlighting the role of Ab. Aziz Roshni in the field of journalism and literature, Renzu said that Aziz was a thorough gentleman with noble character. He said that Aziz will be remembered as a torch bearer in social circles as well as in media fraternity. The participants prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and expressed sympathy with his son Zahoor Ahmad and other bereaved family members.
