| Hurriyat asks Omar to step down | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Apr 27: The moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference on Tuesday asked Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to step down charging him with failure to put an end to human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir. "Present government claimed that human rights violations would not be tolerated but army and other forces are indulging in it daily. A sense of insecurity grips people. When Delhi is not responding to the CM's pleas on the issue, he should resign", leader of the faction Mirwaiz Umer Farooq told reporters at the end of the amalgam's two-day meeting here. Accusing the Chief Minister of failing to protect the lives of people of the state, he said, "The writ of the state government does not run here as the Army, BSF, CRPF and police enjoy an upper hand. Literally, security forces are ruling the state. The Deputy Commissioners in districts are without powers." Alleging that the Union Government had turned the state into a garrison, he said the army and paramilitary forces are not deployed in the state to fight militants but to suppress people. "They have set up camps and bunkers in cities and towns. People are being killed in places where these camps and bunkers are located. Army and paramilitary forces are here to suppress the protestors against rights violations," he said. Condemning the alleged beating up of journalists by police yesterday during a PDP protest march demanding resumption of dialogue between India and Pakistan for the resolution of Kashmir issue, the Hurriyat leader said, "People are under the impression that local police will be sympathetic but they are also using sticks and guns to silence people." Commenting on the opposition PDP's suggestion to fight for resolution of Kashmir issue, he described the party and its rival National Conference as "pro-Indian" which wanted resolution of the issue to gain power.
