| Course on 'Gender Justice and Role of Police' inaugurated | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT UDHAMPUR, Apr 27: To sensitize the participants about the rights of women in society and the legal provisions for the protection of fair sex, a three-day course on "Gender justice and role of Police", was inaugurated at Sher-i- Kashmir Police Academy (SKPA), Udhampur by the Chairperson, State Commission for Women, J&K, Jammu, Shamim Firdous, here today. Director, SKPA, Navin Aggarwal presided over the inaugural session. As many as 35 Police Officers of the State ranging from Sub Inspector to the rank of Dy. SP are taking part in the course. Speaking at the inaugural session, Shamim Firdous said that though under the Indian Constitution gender justice has been ensured yet the real implementation has to be overseen by the police. Entrusted with the powers to penalize the violators, Police as a power functionary can ensure implementation of constitutional and other enabling provisions for ensuring that the fairer sex gets a due share. She said that one must remember the positive aspect and clause of equality so that society in general and police in particular could prove an instrumental in protecting the rights of women and provide them due justice. The Chairperson said that state government has taken various steps to ameliorate the lot of women of the State. For the purpose, State Women Commission has been set up to take due care of the problems of women. Director SKAP, Aggarwal while speaking on the occasion said that aim for holding this workshop was to sensitize the participants about the legal provisions for the protection of the rights of women and devise ways and means to prevent fair sex from domestic violence as the half of the population of the country, comprise women. He said that rights of the women are being looked after by the police effectively. For the purpose, he said that presently women police stations are functioning in most of the districts of the state to take due care of women problems and to ensure that justice its being delivered to them irrespective of any caste, creed and gender.
