| Lecture on "Evolution of Species via Genome Combination" held | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 28:University of Jammu today organized a lecture on "Evolution of Species via Genome Combination" by Dr Andreas Houben from Leibniz Institute for Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research, Germany. This lecture was the 3rd in the Popular Science Lecture Series, an initiative of the Vice-Chancellor coordinated by Prof Rajnikant. Dr Andreas Houben is a Ph.D from Martin Luther University, Germany and has worked extensively on "Plant Chromosomes". He has held several post doctoral research fellowships in Australia and Germany. Presently, he is a Visiting Professor at Kyoto University, Japan and Masaryk University, Czech Republic. Dr Houben is working on an International collaborative project funded by DST, Govt of India and DAAD Germany with Prof Manoj K Dhar of University of Jammu, on construction of Plant Artificial chromosomes. He made a masterly presentation on the various aspects of evolution of species. Polyploidy is an inherent aspect of plant species and it has been a major process in the evolution of plant species. Around 80% of all flowering plants are polyploids. Dr Houben explained in detail various processes which occur after the genomes of distant organisms are combined. He gave very appropriate examples of successful species combinations. Earlier, Prof. Rajni Kant outlined the aims and objectives of the lecture series. Prof RD Sharma, Dean Academic Affairs, who was the chairman of the session, in his address expressed happiness over the initiative and appreciated the efforts of the Science Faculty in organizing such popular seminars especially by inviting scientists of International repute. Prof Manoj Dhar, Director, School of Biotechnology opined that the international collaborative with Dr Houben project will go a long way in broadening the understanding on origin of novel chromosomes.
