Cop die, another wounded as militants make dramatic appearance at Lal Chowk
10/15/2006 9:52:47 PM
Srinagar, October 15 : Unidentified gunmen, believed to be militants, shot dead one police personal and injured another at Lal chowk in the heart of Srinagar, summer capital of the state, here this morning.
Official Sources told News Agency of Kashmir that unidentified gunmen, believed to be two in number, surfaced in Lal chowk area, this morning, and pumped bullets in the body of two police constables, from a point blank range. There was confusion even among the shopkeepers of the area about the possibility of use of silencer fitted revolver in the attack.
Though few of the shopkeepers, who immediately downed their shutter, told News Agency of Kashmir that they heard two gun shots, some others said they were taken to surprise when someone told them that two police personnel were shot dead. “I did not heard any gun shot”, said Ghulam Nabi, adding “I just ran for safety when someone told me that two police personnel were lying in poll of blood”.
A police officer said that the police constables, who were on security duty, were fired from point blank rage as a result of which one of them died on the spot, while another suffered critical injuries.
Militants, who fired on the cops, vanished from the spot leaving the police personnel in pool of blood. The shootout triggered panic in the area as shopkeepers pulled down their shutters and traffic diverted.
Police and paramilitary troops surrounded the area immediately and mounted massive searches.
Both the cops were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where one of them Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din was declared brought dead, while another Constable Ghulam Hassan was battling with life in the hospital, said a senior police officer. The police personnel wee posted with police station Kothibagh, he said, adding, "We are conducting searches in the adjoining locality and the lanes and by-lanes," sources said.
