Govt cautioned against downsizing security in Valley
4/28/2010 11:55:48 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Apr 28: Cautioning the state and Centre against any move to downsize the security forces, including troops, in Kashmir Valley, Security and intelligence agencies have, instead, sought additional deployment of paramilitary forces following the plan of the separatists to organise mass protests against what they call "state terrorism." Official sources said that the intelligence and security agencies have conveyed to the Government that no step be taken to downsize the security apparatus in the state especially in the Kashmir valley. According to these sources, the central Government had plans of conceding Omar Abdullah's demand for reduction of troops and repeal of the AFSPA but the latest plan of the separatists to forge unity so that mass protests could be staged against state terrorism on a massive scale is said to have forced the Ministry of Defence and Home to defer the plan. Besides the separatists, the PDP too has decided to keep its mass protests alive till the Government fulfilled its fo major demands which included reduction of troops, repeal of the AFSPA, release of political detainees and the resolution of the Kashmir issue.
Police sources expressed relief over the way the separatists rejected PDP's call for a joint platform for staging protest rallies. The PDP leadership wanted to give teeth to its mass protest programme by joining hands with the separatists and once that had materialised it would have become difficult for the security forces to tackle what could have been a mass uprising. The separatists have turned down the PDP's suggestion. They have stated that there was a possibility of forming a united front if all the PDP MLAs resigned from the membership of the House.Informed sources said that majority of PDP MLAs ar e not yet ready to quit because they have just complet ed one year as member of the House. They have still five years more which could help them ear n good pension. But if the PDP leadership came under pressure from people in Kashmir it may direct its MLA s to resign.
