| State Govt to construct 5 MWs power project at Marmat | | | Doda, Oct 15: Power Development Department has reportedly proposed a minor hydro-electric project for Marmat area of district Doda with the capacity of 5 MWs, for which investigation process has already been started. Sources said that after conducting a detailed survey of the area, a team of Power Development Department, Civil investigation wing has proposed Jeheree area opposite Beri village as a site for the construction of the power project. Sources in the department told News Agency of Kashmir that the paper work for the construction of the project was being completed and the actual work would start somewhere in the beginning of the next year. If sources have to be believed, the team, which visited the area proposed Jeheree area for the construction of the take up point. At Jeheree at least seven Nallas, including Dranga, Shingshala, Baldri, Dheto, Dekhoda, Lohga and Palmar combines to form a big water stream. It is this stream, sources said, which would be used for the generation of electricity. “The investigation team has further proposed that after diverting the water of the stream a power house would be constructed at Bheri”, a senior officer of PDD said, adding “The length of the canal is likely to be 2 Kms and project will generated about 5 MWs power, which would be enough to meet the requirement of entire Marmat belt”. Anayatulla Lone President Marmat Development Forum, which had proposed the power project, told NAK over phone that the generation of power would fulfill long pending demand of the area, which has suffered a lot due to illiteracy and lack of basic facilities. “More than 90 per cent population of the area is without electricity supply at present and the generation of the power in the area would definitely solve their problems”, he said. As per Lone the villages of the area are already on the PDD record, however, the villages are scattered in a vast area as a result of which electricity supply was not probably provided till now. He, however, expressed optimism that the project would be started and completed in due course of time so that the people of the area may not suffer any more. |
