CU VC: Kashmiri Hindus' opposition to Mattoo very significant
STARK REALITY

RUSTAM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Apr 28: There was no doubt whatsoever that former Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University, Prof Amitabh Mattoo, did not enjoy any support of the community to which he belongs, leave aside a handful of "mercenaries" who have been working with him to promote their selfish interests at the cost of the Indian nation.
However, it is true that the community leaders had seldom taken on Prof Mattoo in the manner they launched a scathing attack on him and that too through print media. This is indeed a very significant development and it augurs well for the community as well as the nation.
What has provoked the Kashmiri Hindu leaders to make common cause with the angry Dogras? The immediate provocation is the report that the powers-that-be in the state and New Delhi have decided to appoint Prof Mattoo as Vice-Chancellor of the Central University in Jammu. The arguments advanced by the Kashmiri Hindu leaders against the reported decision are the same as being consistently advanced by the agitating sections of the Jammu civil society, including student organizations. In fact, the Kashmiri Hindu leaders have gone several steps further and denounced Prof Mattoo in downright language.
That Prof Mattoo has fallen from grace and that the Kashmiri Hindu leaders are bitterly opposed to the idea of appointing him as Vice-Chancellor of the Central University became evident on Tuesday (April 27), when at least three prominent leaders of the Kashmiri Hindu community registered their opposition to the report move. The leaders included A N Vaishnavi, Dr Ajay Chrungoo and Dr Agnishekhar. Each one of them contemptuously dismissed Prof Mattoo as a "point-man" whose single-point agenda is to "implement the unfinished agenda (Musharraf formula) on Jammu and Kashmir rather than a representative of the community."
What did Vaishnavi, Chrungoo and Agnishekher say while expressing themselves against Prof Mattoo? A N Vaishnavi, a very senior leader of the Kashmiri Hindu community said:
"Prof. Mattoo is a puppet in the hands" of certain anti-national forces and "he is being sent on a mission to carry out (their) orders".
"Prof. Mattoo is neither representing the community nor the nation, he simply carries out the orders" of anti-national forces "while being on a position in Jammu. Kashmiri Pandits were not benefitted during his earlier tenure as Vice Chancellor of Jammu University while he carried out the orders of his masters", he also said.
Almost similar was the opinion of Dr. Ajay Chrungoo, chairman of Panun Kashmir, a premier organization of the internally displaced Kashmiri Hindus. He said: "We have never agreed with his views on Kashmir or Kashmiri Pandits and nobody should commit a mistake of identifying his placement in Jammu as furthering of KPs interests." "It is more of an attempt…to foist a 'hit-men' to further the agenda on parting away with Jammu and Kashmir", he, in addition, said.
As for Dr. Agnishekhar, another prominent Kashmiri Hindu leader, he lamented: "Professor Mattoo's reported nomination as vice chancellor of Central University is of great concern to the Kashmiri Pandit community as well as the Dogras of Jammu region". Besides, he said: "We see no benefit of his being the vice chancellor of Central University". He even went to the extent of saying that he "anticipates" an "escalation" in the "already fragile atmosphere in the state"; that "Panun Kashmir views with serious concern the sinister move… (to) appoint (Prof Mattoo as) VC of the central University of Jammu"; that the "move seems (to be) a deliberate design to create a wedge among the nationalist forces" and that "we are holding an emergent meeting on the issue and would come out with a detailed response soon".
What these leading Kashmiri Hindu leaders said should open the eyes of the authorities who have been thinking in terms of appointing Amitabh Mattoo as Vice-Chancellor of the Central University. Not to pay heed to the views as expressed by the Kashmiri Hindu leaders, as also by those spearheading appoint-Jammu-based-academician-as-Vice-Chancellor-of-Central University-in-Jammu-movement and to thrust Prof Mattoo would be only to create a serious law and order situation in the otherwise peaceful Jammu province. Authorities should not take any risk.
