| Controversy over local VC for CU Jammu gains momentum | | Govt cannot apply different yardsticks for Jammu, Kashmir: JSM | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 29: The Union HRD Ministry's purported move to appoint Prof Amitabh Mattoo as first Vice Chancellor of Central University Jammu has snowballed into a controversy as it has evoked mixed response in political and social organizations in Jammu region. While frontline Kashmiri Pandits organizations, Jammu State Morcha (JSM) and other social organizations has opposed the move demanding appointment of an Dogra as first Vice Chancellor of this prestigious institute, All India Sikh United Front (Secular), an organization of Sikhs and Rasa Javedni Memorial Literary Society (RJMLS) have welcomed his appointment, saying it would further boost academic activities in the region. To this series, Jammu State Morcha (JSM), which alongwith some other organisations have called for Jammu bandh on May 1, today sought the support of general public for observing complete strike in protest against purported move of the government to appoint Prof Mattoo as the Vice Chancellor. “Jammu bandh is being observed to oppose any move to install a Vice-Chancellor for the Central University other than the son of the soil,” Anil Gour, JSM vice president and spokesperson told reporters at a press conference here this morning. Gour alleged that all the Vice-Chancellors appointed in the Universities of Kashmir Province are Valley-based but the Universities across the Jammu region have no local Vice-Chancellors, but all outsiders. "Presently the Vice-Chancellors of all the three varsities in Jammu including Jammu University, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University and the Agricultural University, are from outside the state,'' he said. He further said the Government of India cannot apply different yardsticks, one for Jammu province and other for Kashmir. ''We appeal the people of Jammu to support and observe complete bandh on May 1 to oppose any move to install any outsider as Vice-Chancellor of Central University,'' the JSM leader said. Gour alleged that Prof Mattoo's track record of six years as the Vice Chancellor of University of Jammu is self-explanatory about his disqualifications for being a good academician. In the course talented academicians were discouraged and those engaged in sycophancy and in non-academic activities were patronized." However, All India Sikh United Front (Secular) hailed the appointment of Prof Mattoo as Vice Chancellor of Central University Jammu. Gurdeep Singh Pandey, president of the front said, 'Those who challenged the appointment of Prof Mattoo are divisive forces whose only motive is to disturb the secular thinking of India as well as the idea of one India'. "Prof Mattoo has countless contribution towards society at large in Jammu and Kashmir and especially for the student community and we strongly supported his appointment," he added. Pandey said, "As the Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University he was awarded with Dogra Rattan Award and also awarded with Padam Shri Award in 2008 and also become the member of Prime minister Knowledge Commission and Prime Minister task force for international affairs which are the remarkable achievements." He expressed hope that his appointment as VC CU Jammu would help the students community of Jammu province.
