EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 29: To streamline the regulation of traffic smoothly in the cities of Jammu and Srinagar, a comprehensive City Transport Policy is being introduced very soon. This was stated by the Minister for Transport and CA&PD, Qamar Ali Akhoon, while reviewing the road safety measures and prices of essential commodities at an officers meeting held here last evening. Akhoon stressed upon the officers of Transport, CAPD and Consumer Welfare organizations to create awareness among the masses about their rights and traffic rules to save the precious lives. He said that these awareness programmes should be organized in schools, colleges, besides, in rural areas to educate the people about the initiatives taken up by the Govern-ment. He said 8 Consumer's Court are being established at district level, adding that orders to this effect are being issued within days. The Minister asked the Director, CAPD Jammu to convene a meeting of whole sale and retail dealers and sort out the measures for fixing of equitable rates of commodities. He also asked the market checking squads to accelerate their efforts to curb the black marketing and profiteering, besides directed for ensuring displaying of rate lists by vegetable and essential commodity dealers. Akhoon emphasized upon the traffic and transport authorities to work in tandem for strictly implementation of traffic rules to curb accidents to save precious lives, besides to avoid un-necessary jams. Responding to the suggestions made by the participants, the Minister said that their valuable suggestions would be looked into sympathetically. The Deputy Transport Commissioner, Bhunesh Sharma made a power point presentation and highlighted the activities of the department with regard to road safety. The meeting was informed that so far 7, 19,221 vehicles have been registered upto ending December last. Of these 1, 26,180 are commercial and 5,93,041 are non-commercial, the meeting was informed. Sofi, RTO Jammu, J.S. Manhas, Dep-uty Controller, Legal Metro-logy, Amar Singh, President Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Y.V. Sharma, President Jammu Retailer Association, Yash Paul Gupta, Chairman Federation of Industries and Comm-erce, Jugal Mahajan, Presi-dent Consumers Protection organization, D.R. Danish, Member Consumer Protec-tion Council, Luxmi Dutta, Member Price Consultant Committee Com. Swaran Dass and other senior officers of CAPD and Transport Department.
