| Tarigami advocates for comprehensive Kisan policy | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Apr 29: The liberalization of agricultural trade through free trade policies and the World Trade Organization rules is an onslaught on the very survival of farmers, said State Secretary CPI (M) and MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami while addressing a convention organized by J&K Kisan Tehreek at Anantnag. These policies, he said, result in cheap imports of agricultural produce, the constant lowering of agricultural produce prices, the increasing costs of inputs and the lowering of state support to local farmers. Tarigami enumerated the problems confronting the peasants and workers of the state and asked the government to take concrete measures to stable the economy of the peasants. He said that the agriculture sector which continues to remain the mainstay of people of the state can not be ignored and demanded quality supply of seeds, fertilizers and chemicals to the farming community. Tarigami warned that the continuing neglect of this primary sector would be a costly folly which could plunge the entire state into a deep economic crises and social unrest. He asked the government to heed the writing on the wall and act now before it is too late. He exhorted the peasant community to unitedly fight for their rights. G N Malik General Secretary of the Tehreek in his speech emphasized for universalization of Public Distribution System (PDS) instead of existing Targeted PDS which denies availability of ration items to majority of our population.
