Stage set for fresh Pak-Sino ties
4/29/2010 11:16:33 PM

Stage is being set for further strengthening the relations between China and Pakistan. In fact the two sides are keen to get as much closer to each other as could prove a source of discomfiture for India. That the two sides were so keen to fortify the 35-year old bond between Islamabad and Beijing that Pakistan's Foreign Minister,Shah Mahmood Qureshi, found time to meet the Chinese vice Foreign Minister,Wang Guangya,on the sidelines of the 16th SAARC meet at Thimpu. In his bid to demonstrate pro-Pakistan bias Wang said that China supports Pakistan's effors aimed at "creating normal and peaceful relations with India."He stated that as such it was incumbent upon the international community to stand by Pakistan and extend full support Islamabad in its counterterrorism strategy. This very statement indicates that Beijing has accepted Islamabad's claim on trying to smoothen its relations with Delhi. It also indicates that China does not accept India's
allegations that Islamabad was using the soil of Pakistan for exporting terrorism to the Indian states, especially to Jammu and Kashmir. It is nothing new as China has sided with Pakistan on all national and international issues.Ever since former Pakistan Prime Minister,Z.A.Bhutto,authored a new Sino-Pak agreement
some 40 years ago Islamabad has been a major beneficiary from Beijing's military and non-military aid.If reports are to be believed Chinese scientists helped Pakistan in the development of nuclear weapons and missiles. No doubt Islamabad has been receiving a sizeable quantum of military aid from the USA it is China that has assisted Pakistan in enetering into the club of nuclear and missile owning countries.Apart from the military aid Chinese engineers and technocrats have helped Pakistan in road development and power generation programme. It is the result of Chinese help that Pakistan has developed multidimensional technology making it capable of trying to measure muscles with India.Wang and Qureshi had no qualms in commiting themselves to further strengthen the bilateral ties.No doubt Qureshi sought assurance from Wang for expanding ties in the education sector by way of allowing students from Pakistan in going for higher education in the
universities
in China, which Wang readily accepted, the basic purpose of the Thimpu meet was to set the stage for the two sides to sit in the near future where Islamabad could extract more concessions from Beijing.Pakistan wants Chinese support so that Islamabad could talk to Delhi from a position of strength. That has been made possible with Chinese open and secret support to Pakistan as for as the latter's policy on Kashmir is concerned.China has a long border dispute with India and the 1962 invasion on India was the outcome of Beijing's eagerness to tame India's growing stature in the international sphere.Since then the border dispute has not been resolved because China has started eyeing Arunachal Pradesh after having annexed vast stretches of the Indian border belts in the North-East and Ladakh.Though culturally there is nothing common between Pakistan and China the two have gone closer after the relations between Delhi and Islamabad and between Delhi and
Beijing
turned sour. And a situation has emerged in which Beijing would be too glad to equip Pakistan with more tanks, missiles, fighter planes and other weapons so that Islamabad was in a position to hit India harder than in the past.It is in this connection that Wang and Qureshi have decided to promote not only people to people contact but the contact between leaders of the two sides for hammering out various agreements.
