Govt to foil Geelani's march to UNMOG
4/30/2010 12:08:49 AM
JAMMU: The government has decided to impose restrictions in the summer capital on Friday to foil Geelani's Sonawar Chalo programme. The decision to this effect, according to a local news agency, was taken in a high level meeting held Saturday.
Early Saturday morning, reports said, hundreds of police men were deployed around Geelani's residence at Hyderpora on the Airport road. Geelani was told that he had been placed under house arrest. The police have been told to maintain strict vigil to prevent the octogenarian leader to give police a slip.
Notwithstanding his ailment and age, Geelani has managed to escape from the police cordon many a time. Last year Geelani gave police a slip and traveled in an autorikshaw to reach a hotel where he was scheduled to address a press conference. However, this time all exit points around his residence have been sealed.
A local news agency quoting police sources said that a high level meeting was held Saturday to discuss the development. The meeting held that the Friday's march had the potential of disrupting peace and public order. It was decided to impose restrictions in the city to foil the march.
The news agency said the police will impose restrictions in the down town and areas around Hamza Masjid in the uptown. At other places, restrictions under section 144 shall be imposed to keep people indoors.
Geelani had urged the people to offer Friday prayers in the Hamza mosque situated on the banks of Jehlum near Amira Kadal. Geelani had plans to lead a procession from the mosque to United Nations Military Observer Group (UNMOG ) office at Sonawar.
According to confirmed reports Geelani had drafted a memorandum seeking international intervention to end `alarming increase' in human rights violations in Jammu Kashmir. The memorandum was scheduled to be presented to the Military Observer.
The police have taken extensive security measures in Lal Chowk and Sonawar to deal with any eventuality. "Allowing the march is a risk which the administration does not want to take", a police official told the media persons.
Meanwhile, a spokesman of Geelani expressed determination to go ahead with the programme despite odds. "The police have imposed severe restrictions on Geelani and his family members. Even women are not allowed to come out in the lawn. This is highly undemocratic."
