| Over a 100 held with 3,500 quintals poppy straw in 3 months | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 29: Foiling several bids of narcotics smugglers to clandestinely carry poppy straw in trucks and other vehicles from Kashmir to outside the state, police and excise department sleuths have seized nearly 3,500 quintals of it from about 100 persons in the first three months of this year. Such a big quantity of the contraband could be seized because of the enhanced vigil on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, official sources said. ncreased vigilance by police and excise department led to the seizure of 4,171 kg of poppy straw in seven incidents in the beginning of February. Over 21 persons were arrested in this regard. 1,000 kg of poppy straw was recovered from a truck on February 20 at Lakhanpur toll post, while 180 kg of the banned drug was seized on February 28. Six persons were taken into custody in this connection. 875 kg of poppy was recovered from a truck in Kashmir on March 2 followed by recovery of 1,500 kg and 600 kg of the contraband at Lakhanpur. In March, 3,000 kg and 4,100 poppy straw was seized from six persons on the highway. The contraband was being carried in trucks. 5,000 kg poppy straw was seized from a parked truck at Hatli Morh in Kathua. "As Kashmir is a rich source of cultivating poppy husk, it is being smuggled from the valley to the rest of the country but, special instructions have been issued to police stations on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway to tighten noose against narcotic smugglers," the sources added. Sources said police were doing their best to track down the movement of narcotics smugglers especially those travelling from Kashmir to other parts. Sources said in the first three months of this year, about 100 narcotics smugglers had been arrested with over 3,500 quintals of poppy straw. "Earlier, it were Kashmiri smugglers who used to carry the contraband outside the state but once they started being trapped, Punjab based touts and smugglers started floating their nexus with the valley-based narcotic smugglers," the sources added. The arrested smugglers hailed from Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana, besides Kashmir.
