| JPPF, JKNPP extend support, say Mattoo not 'acceptable' as VC of CUJ | | Jammu bandh today | |
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 30: Jammu Provincial Peoples Forum (JPPF)-an amalgam of several political and non-political outfits- today vowed to spearhead campaign for appointment of local Vice Chancellor for Central University Jammu (CUJ). It also announced to support the Jammu bandh call given by the Jammu Central University Morcha (JCUM) which is to be observed tomorrow. "We are not against any community as the Kashmiri Pandits are the soul of Jammu region. We are against the credentials of Prof Amitabh Mattoo and his sympathetic view towards the separatist movement in Kashmir. Any move to appoint him as Vice Chancellor of CUJ would not be acceptable to Jammuites," Sunil Sethi, president Bar Association Jammu told reporters here. All the constituents of newly formed JPPF held a meeting this morning and unanimously decided to support the bandh call in protest against the Union HRD Ministry's purported move to appoint former Vice Chancellor of Jammu University as VC of CUJ. The BAJ president warned the state and the centre governments not to go ahead and finalise the name of Prof Amitabh Mattoo for the post of first VC of CUJ. Sethi said, "Recently certain media reports claimed to have confirmed appointment of Prof Mattoo on the post whereas no formal announcement in this regard has been made as yet. The State as well as the Central government is trying to create wedge between nationalist forces in Jammu region, besides attempts are being made to create differences among Dogra and Kashmiri Pandits communities." The leader cautioned the government and said, "It is important to keep in mind the past credentials of Amitabh Mattoo. Everyone is aware of the fact that when he was at the helm sycophants were all around him and received plum assignments at the cost of ignoring real academic excellence." "His appointment as first Vice Chancellor of the Central University would not be acceptable to the people of Jammu. We fervently urge the union government to appoint a local academician as Vice Chancellor of this prestigious institution," he asserted. Sethi said, "It is very intriguing to note that all the Vice Chancellors of Kashmir based universities are some local academicians but when it comes to selecting people for Jammu based institutions an attempt is made to impose an outsiders on the people and students of Jammu region." He claimed that the newly formed JPPF enjoys the support of 32 organisations including Bar Association Jammu, Chamber of Industry and Commerce, transporters, student organisations. The Convener of Central University Andolan Samiti (CUAS)-Judge (retired) Paviter Singh has been entrusted with the responsibility of heading the forum. In his address, Singh said that after fighting for the cause of the Central University Jammu now they have decided to fight for the right of the academicians of Jammu region. Meanwhile, Peoples' Revolutionary Movement (PRM) has called a bandh in Jammu tomorrow over the appointment of an 'outsider' as the Vice-Chancellor of the Central University in the region. "Our demand is appointment of a local Vice-Chancellor for the Central University as all the universities in the entire Jammu region are being headed by the outsiders," Rajinder Jamwal, president PRM said. Jamwal alleged that Jammu had always faced discrimination on one issue or the other and both the governments -- the state government and the Centre -- has shown step-motherly attitude towards the region. "Appointment of a non-local vice-chancellor, for such a prestigious institution, will never be acceptable to the people of Jammu," he warned. Similarly, the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) has decided to support the bandh call given by several political and social organizations demanding local Vice-Chancellor for Jammu Central University. The Panthers Party Chairman, Prof. Bhim Singh counseled Panthers party workers throughout Jammu to support the bandh call actively and effectively. The Panthers Party has urged the Prime Minister for his intervention to appoint Dogra Vice-Chancellor in the Jammu Central University to honour the aspirations and sentiments of the people of Jammu.
