| SSP refuses to release suspects, people warn of protests | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT KATHUA, Apr 30: As SSP Gareeb Dass today said that it was not possible for police to release suspects in the murder of an alleged bovine smuggler last week, prominent citizens warned of protests. In a meeting with local politicians and prominent people of Kathua, the SSP said the suspects could not be set free till police investigation in the case was over. Truck driver Naresh Kumar of Tanda, R S Pura, was beaten mercilessly by some agitated youth after they came to know that he was smuggling cows and other milch animals from Punjab to Kashmir. These animals were loaded in his truck. After Naresh's death in hospital, police had rounded up several suspects. The prominent Kathua people had a meeting with the SSP on this issue. Though they told Dass that the suspects held by police were innocent, he expressed his helplessness to release them till the investigation was over. After the meeting ended, the prominent people warned of protests and anti-police demonstrations if the suspects were not released soon. Among others, the meeting was attended by former Kathua municipal council president Naresh Kumar Sharma , Vishav Hindu Parishad activist Gian Singh Pathania, Panthers Party district president Ravinder Singh Pathania and BJP leader Sain Dass Gupta.
