| CU VC: Jammu has changed, taking it for granted would be suicidal | | | RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 30: Jammu has changed. There should be no doubt about it. To doubt it would be to invite trouble and the Jammu's ire. The attitude of its people has undergone a radical change and dramatically. They have become assertive and they now know how to get things done. It appears they have now come to the conclusion that it would be too much to accept the life of servitude any longer. In fact, their political behaviour and actions have only served to demonstrate their firm resolve to obtain their legitimate due share in the political, economic and social processes of the state at whatever cost and have a real and effective say in the governance of the state. Notwithstanding the limitations of the Jammu-based leaders of national parties, including the Congress and the BJP, they now acknowledge in their heart of hearts that the people of Jammu province have suffered immense losses during the past about 62 years and that whichever demand they put forth cannot be brushed aside or dismissed as a manifestation of their bias against Kashmir. That's the reason that when it comes to the crunch they stand solidly behind those fighting for the genuine and popular Jammu cause. The situation in Jammu has now changed to the extent that everyone forgets his/her personal and political difference and rally round those fighting for the just cause of Jammu and its dignity and identity, leave alone a handful of black sheep, which are found everywhere. This is not an exaggeration. This is fact and it can be easily verified. It is hardly necessary to refer to their successful movements over the Amarnath land issue, location of Central University, establishment of Ayurvedic College, gender equality or Permanent Resident (Disqualification) Bill and the official move to ban inter-district recruitment. For, the memory of the remarkable role played by the determined people of Jammu province, coupled with equally remarkable victories, is still too fresh to be forgotten. These are some of the major highlights of the role played by the people of Jammu province during the past about 22 months and these have become part of the Jammu's glorious history of struggle. The people of Jammu province are again in a fighting mood and this time the issue that has brought them together or that has made them display a remarkable unity is the issue of who should be the Vice-Chancellor of the Central University in Jammu - a local academician or an outsider. The manner in which the people of Jammu and their organizations have been conducting themselves over the ground or beneath the surface does indicate that they would not allow the authorities to thrust any outsider on the Central University as its first Vice-Chancellor. The manner in which different political and social groups and those representing Chamber of Commerce and Industry and other interests came together on Friday and appealed to the people of Jammu to observe a complete shutdown on May 1 to register their emphatic protest against the reported decision of the authorities to appoint Prof Amitabh Mattoo or any other outsider as Vice-Chancellor of the Central University in Jammu does not indicate any other thing. It indicates only one thing: Don't take the people of Jammu for granted. The ball is in the court of the authorities. It is for them to exercise a choice between meeting the genuine demand of the people of Jammu province and facing the Jammu's ire. |
