| Near complete bandh in Jammu for local VC of CUJ | | Shopkeepers thrash NCP activists for forcibly closing down shutters | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 1: Normal life virtually came to standstill in Jammu district and its outskirts as near complete bandh was observed in protest against the Union HRD Ministry's purported move of appointing a non-Dogra as the Vice Chancellor of upcoming Central University Jammu (CUJ). Shops and commercial establishments were closed in most parts of Jammu district while public transport remained off the road in response to a bandh called by different political and social organisations demanding appointment of a local Vice Chancellor for Central University Jammu. The bandh affected routine functioning of government as well as private offices as they reported thin attendance. Reports said that most of private educational institutions had kept "off day" in view of the bandh call. The bandh was called by Jammu University Central Morcha (JCUM) Jammu Provincial People Forum (JPPF), an amalgam of several political and non-political outfits, Jammu Joint Student Federation (JJSF), Jammu State Morcha (JSM), Jammu Kashmir National Panthers Party (KNPP), Dogra Liberation Front, SOS and Shiv Sena to demand appointment of local person to the post of Vice Chancellor in upcoming Central University Jammu. People had to face tough time on roads due to non-availability of public transport and long queues were witnessed at different bus and mini-bus stops. The tourists visiting Jammu were also subjected to several hardships as no commercial vehicles remained off the roads. Reports said that the protestors also smashed the window panes of a mini-bus at Dogra Chowk. However, two activists of Nationalistic Congress Party (NCP) were severely thrashed by the local shopkeepers when they forcibly tried to close down the shops at Hari market. Later, they were arrested by the police for indulging in violence activities. Overwhelmed by the "complete" Jammu bandh, observed voluntarily by the people, JCUM expressed gratitude and thanked the people of Jammu for being alive and active to any "anti-Jammu" move and said that Jammu Bandh was an indication that Jammuities have vehemently denounced the "anti-Jammu" policy of the Union government, particularly against the appointment of any outsider including Kashmiri as Vice-Chancellor of new Jammu Central University. Addressing media persons in Jammu after holding a protest rally throughout Jammu and its outskirts, JCUM leaders, extended thanks to all social, traders, transporters, political, student organizations, which includes newly formed JPPF, Bar Association, Chamber of Commerce, Federation of Retailers and common man of Jammu and clarified that their demand is neither communal nor aimed against any individual but purely to protect the interests and rights of Jammuites. "Anybody trying to misinterpret or create confusion among masses would be viewed seriously. No outsider would be allowed to head any institution in Jammu, in future, including already existing Universities in Jammu," he warned. JCUM leaders also appreciated the role of both the Jammu MPs, especially Lal Singh for emphatically projecting and registering the protest and resentment of Jammu in Parliament for appointing some outsider including Kashmiri as Vice-Chancellor of new Jammu Central University. They also questioned the role of "so-called champions" of Jammu BJP, having 11 MLAs for being "mute spectator and silent observer" to the problem of Jammu, from where they gets elected and pledged to project and defend the rights of people. They reiterated that BJP owed explanation to the people for being quiet and unconcerned throughout this agitation on this popular issue of public importance, and cannot escape now for a long. JCUM also viewed the attack on NCP leaders during observance of Bandh seriously terming it as a handiwork of "anti-Jammu" and "pro-government" forces, which never wanted the voice of Jammu to be united and also questioned the role of police demanding immediate probe into the matter. JCUM leaders who addressed the press conference included Rajinder Jamwal (PRM), Varinder Gupta (JSM), Udey Chand (DPP), Kuldeep Chib (JJSF), Rajeev Chuni (SOS International), Rampal Sharma (DLF) and Mohinder Pal Singh Pandu (SSJAC).
