| Dy CM discusses de-mining issue with Army | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 2: Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand today conducted a tour of border village Gigrial and adjoining villages to redress the problems of the locals regarding land acquisition by the Army for mining purposes. To discuss the grievances of the inhabitants, Tara Chand met Major General, GOC 10 Infantry Div K. Majumdar and other senior officers of the Army and had threadbare deliberation discussion to resolve the issue pertaining to land acquired by the Army for the mining and other purposes. Deputy Chief Minister asked the Major General to vacate the land so that local farmers are able to cultivate their land as they have been suffering a lot due to capturing of land by the Army. He was informed by the Army that as Gigrial and other adjoining villages are located at the Zero line Army is not in a position to handover the land to the villagers due to security reasons but they will try their best to find the alternate for the convenience of farmers. It was apprised that the land other than that on the zero line would be demined and handover to people but for land on acute border line which is a high security zone area, compensation or rent would be the given to the farmers. The Deputy Chief Minister was assured that poor locals of the area would not be made to suffer at any cost. The Deputy Chief Minister later convened a public meeting and informed that Army had already started de-mining work of 13 mine field of which the work on three has been completed and handover to farmer besides the work on two is under process and remaining eight would be completed possibly before monsoon. CO 19 Sikh Regiment Col Harpreet informed the Deputy Chief Minister that in various areas de-mining has not possible due to security reason. He assured that Army will allow the villagers of Gigrial and other villages to go for cultivation beyond these mine fields by providing alternate route. He said that work on de-mining has already been started on war footing. Speaking on the occasion, Tara Chand apprised that the Army will be conducting recruitment drive for border area youths on May 3. He appealed the villagers to participants in large numbers so as to overcome unemployment problems in the Gigrial and adjoining areas. Sarpanches of different villages putforth their demands and requested the Army to allow them for cultivation beyond mine fields and provide them the safe path to cross over the mine fields. Among others Deputy Commissioner Jammu M K Dwivedi, SDM Akhnoor, officers from Revenue department, prominent citizens and locals were also present on the occasion.
