| Awareness Prog on 'Quit Smoking' held | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 2: Amandeep Hospital, Amritsar organised a Public Awareness Programme on "Quit Smoking" at its OPD Clinic, Gandhi Nagar here on Sunday. According to Dr Rominder Kaur HOD, Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Amandeep Hospital, Amritsar, who gave an audio/video presentation, said smoking was regarded solely as a "lifestyle choice", but now recognized as a "chronic relapsing disorder" caused because of addiction. He said, "it has become the leading cause of mortality and morbidity over the years. There are about 1.2 billion smokers in the world. Smoking causes 5.4 million deaths per year. If present trends continue more than 8 million smokers per year are projected to die by 2030. The prevalence varies greatly, from less than 5% to more than 48% in different countries. India has about 120 million smokers. 17 per cent of males and 9 per cent of females in 13-15 yrs age group use tobacco. Smoking currently causes about 700,000 deaths per year in India." Manish Manocha, Relationship Manager J&K, Amandeep Hospital said that the hospital has launched various public awareness programmes in J&K. " Amandeep Hospital starts Chest Diseases clinic in Jammu on first Sunday of every month. Today's awareness programme was organized to educate the society about various aspects of smoking. Hospital is going to organize such awareness programmes with different educational institutions, business houses, NGO's and some Govt. Houses. Amandeep Hospital also organizing First Aid Training and workshop camps in different parts of J&K," he said.
