Measures afoot to overcome irrigation water scarcity: Bhalla

JAMMU, May 2: Minister for Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation, Raman Bhalla has said that the coalition government is endeavouring hard to provide adequate irrigation facilities to the farmers for enabling them to cope up with the long dry spells being experienced in the state.
Minister was addressing a large gathering after inaugurating Tube Well for Irrigation purpose at Chatha East, constructed at a cost of Rs 32 lakh, here this afternoon.
Bhalla said that on the completion of Tube Well, about 80 acres of agriculture land of Chatha East would be irrigated through water distributaries. He said that coalition government was committed to provide irrigation facilities to farmers at the tail end of their respective villages of the State by constructed tube wells, pump sets and Ranbir canal.
Minister said that to uplift the socio-economic condition of the farmer community in the state, the government has launched number of welfare schemes like loans on nominal rates, seeds on lowest rates and agriculture implement kits. He asked the Irrigation Department to immediately start the repair and renovation work of water distributaries so that the irrigation water could be supplied to the farmers at the tail end of Chatha village.
Responding to the locals demand, he asked the R&B authorities to immediately start the desilting and earthen work of Balol nallah in Chatha near SKUAST University so that the people do not face any inconvenience during rainy season. He said that Government has approved Rs 9 lakh for this purpose.
Listing the measures taken by the Government in Chatha and its adjoining areas, Bhalla said that Rs 5 crore bridge over Balol nallah has been constructed near SKUAST-J university.
To ease the rush in city of temples hospitals, he said that government has approved Rs 1.60 crore for construction of Primary Health Centre at Bhour camp.
At Gandhi Nagar, the Minister conducted a public darbar and listened to the problems of the people.
Bhalla informed that a comprehensive plan has been formulated for facilitating the Evacuee Property (EP) tenants adding that effective measures were taken to curb the menace of illegal occupation on EP.
Minister said that premium shall be charged after taking into consideration the use and market rate prevalent in the locality where the EP is situated. He said that the allotments shall be made for a period of 20 years in the first instance for residential purposes and 40 years for commercial purposes.
Bhalla said that the premium in respect of the EP used by the illegal occupants for commercial purposes shall be determined on the basis of potential value of the land.
Minister said the illegal occupants shall have to pay the rent of EP with effect from the date in occupation of the same on rates as provided under EP Act and Rules made there under.
