| Gujjars for separate channel on Doordarshan | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 2: Demanding for opening of a separate Channel on Doordarshan by declaring Programme Generating Facility (PGF) Rajouri as DD Gojri, the Gujjars and Bakerwals today expressed resentment against "non-representation" to their mother tongue in daily telecast of programme aired on various channels of Doordarshan in the State. In a communication sent through Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation, a frontal organization of Gujjars, the community reiterated their long pending demand and reminded the Union Ministry for Information and Broadcasting that speakers of Gojri language feel "totally ignored and completely overlooked" by the policy makers of country's largest public television broadcaster working under Parsar Bharti Corporation. The communication suggested that the gap can be bridged by way of declaring PGF Rajouri as DD Gojri. Justifying the opening of a new channel for this tribal language, the letter maintained that Gojri is one of the significant languages of India and it needs extra constitutional safeguard, special attention and encouragement." Dr. Javaid Rahi, Secretary, Tribal Foundation lamented, "we have reminded authorities that a delegation of prominent Gojri writers had met with Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Abmica Soni in Srinagar October last and demanded that the DD (Programme Generating Facility ) PGF Rajouri be made functional on priority and should be declared "DD Gojri" immediately but nothing emerge concrete out of it," adding that a delegation of Gojri writers would visit Delhi during next month to pursue its case there. The communication reads that it is astonishing that DDdoes not telecast even a single daily programme in Gojri- the language of Gujjars-in its 24 X 7 telecast of various DD channels in J&K. The letter further highlighted that the DD News Srinagar and Air News Srinagar does not cover the news items of Gujjars and did not telecast or broadcaste the reports from remote villages and tribal population of the state in their own mother tongue. Dr Rahi alleged that DD channels are in no way the representative channel of all communities and tribes of J&K State.
