| Pathania calls for protest over water crisis | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT UDHAMPUR, May 2: Youth Congress activist from Ramnagar RS Pathania has pooh-poohed the local administration for totally failing in providing drinking water to the people of Majalta. Addressing a public meeting at Bharnara in the heart of Majalta tehsil, Pathania said that due to lesser rainfall, groundwater levels have plummeted to an all-time low and the natural water sources, hand-pumps, wells and bowlis have dried up creating a worst sort of water crisis in the area. He lamented that lacs and crores of public money is being spent by government on giving salaries to PHE employees, creating pumping stations and laying down of water-lines but it is highly unfortunate that people of Majalta are still bereft of drinking water facility. More so, even government institutions like High Schools at Motu & Sundla, PHC at Majalta and other health, veterinary sub-centers, Anganwadi centers are still bereft of drinking water facility. He alleged that majority of duct and water-tanks are supplying contaminated water to people in the area. In Manwal, water from a nearby cremation ground is over-flowing into the water-supply tank and Manwal, Chaini, Telay, Devi Bani and other villages are forced to drink contaminated water. In Sundla, supply of unfiltered water had led to break-out of epidemic leading to death of two persons and hospitalisation of many. The people present over there were highly critical of the indifferent and non-serious approach of the PHE authorities, particularly, in the light of countless requests and ultimatums given to the effect. The people have repeatedly been demanding deputing of one water-tanker exclusively for Majalta for ferrying water to arid areas but the requests seem to have fallen on flat ears and the stiff-necked authorities are yet to move. It was unanimously decided that a massive Tehsil wide protest/bandh on May 10 shall be observed. Further modalities of protest and practices sought to be employed in the proposed protest shall be chalked out in an all-party meeting scheduled on May 9. Various NGOs, intellectuals, student organizations and pressure groups have also been called in the said all-party meeting.
