| Jandrah villagers face water resource crunch | | They walk long distance to fetch water for cattle | | ARTEEV SHARMA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 3: State government's claim that necessary measures have been initiated to deal with water crisis has turned out to be somewhat hollow if one looks at the prevailing situation on the ground. The cattle owners in Jandrah area-about 50 Kms away from Jammu city-and its adjoining villages have been acute shortage of water since the onset of summer season as the water bodies have dried up here. The problem has been aggravated because of a drought like situation in all parts of the State. The villagers informed that they have to carry water from far off places because of the acute shortage of water scarcity. Water shortage has also affected the milk production in these villages. "Due to non-availability of adequate water, every animal is producing two litres of less milk. Therefore, there are a lot of problems...animals are producing less. The economic conditions of villagers who sell milk and earn their livelihood also got deteriorated," Ajay Sharma (Aju), a resident of Jandrah told Early Times. "We have to travel one to two kilometres away to fetch water not only for ourselves but also for cattle. We are facing lots of problem because of water scarcity. Water is not even there in the tube wells as all of them got totally dried," said Dhani Ram, a cattle owner. He further said, "The scanty and extremely poor rainfall has created a tough situation for all the cattle owners of Jandrah and its adjoining villages during this summer. It is very tough to quench the thirst of our animals." Raj Kumar, another villager said, "Earlier, people used to get water from small nallahs and nearby tube wells and animals used to drink water on their own but now we are facing lot of problems. We have to travel a long distance of about one to two kilometres to get water for them now. Even the only resource of our drinking water viz Devika also got dried up due to construction of bore well and setting up of a brick kiln." "The government should either make bore well functional or stop functioning of brick kiln which has adversely affected the ecology of the area," he demanded. He made stratiling revelations that the water shortage problem is so severe that certain neighbourhoods in the village don't receive water at all. The villagers complained that many times they have brought this to the notice of the concerned officials, but the problem remains.
