| Police must safeguard human rights as they fight militants: IG | | | SRINAGAR, OCT 15 Police in Jammu and Kashmir have to safeguard human rights while battling militancy in the state, Inspector General (IG) of Police S M Sahai said today. “Although extraordinary circumstances demand extraordinary steps, yet the rights of the civilians related to life and dignity are to be safeguarded,” Sahai said winding up a three-day seminar here today. The seminar on ‘International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights’ was organised by the state armed police in collaboration with the International Committee for Red Cross. Referring to the recent encounter between militants and security forces at Budshah Chowk in the heart of the city, Sahai, who is heading the Kashmir Zone, said as he was supervising the gunbattle he “made sure that there was no collateral damage.” “In this encounter only one civilian lost his life whereas police and CRPF lost seven persons. This is the best example of how police forces safeguarded human rights and maintained self-restraint,” the IGP claimed. Sahai said it was police’s duty to safeguard the life and property of the people. He also said that due respect must be given to people while checking their vehicles and frisking them.
