Protest at Muthi makes no impact but confusion and divisions prevail
5/4/2010 12:03:12 AM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 3: Even as the protest organized by some fringe elements today at Muthi, the hub of Kashmiri Pandit habitation did not make any impact for the cause it was held, but this cannot be seen in isolation and taken casually in the backdrop of some developments related to support by some KP 'leaders' to the cause of Jammu bandh on May 1.
There were no prominent or big leaders nor was any prominent organization backing the protest today. But still it assumes significance for more than one reason. If it was one set of 'leaders' of Kashmiri Pandit community who came in support of individuals and organizations that have been spearheading movement in favour of Jammu based VC for Central University, today one more set of people, if not leaders , perhaps lesser known emerged on the scene only to say anything and everything against those KP leaders who not only opposed proposed appointment of Prof AMitabh Matoo as Vice Chancellor of Central University but made some 'uncalled for remarks' against him during the course of campaign for bandh.
Interestingly, the protestors today managed to rope in some youth belonging to both KP community as well as local Dogra community. This is good in so far as some show of 'unity and solidarity' is concerned. And so can be the stance of some leaders be seen as who supported the cause for Jammu based VC spearheaded by local organizations here. But more than opposing or supporting the 'real' cause, both KP groups appear to be in disarray and in confusion as to the scene in much the same way the protagonists of Jammu bandh at various points of time handled the issue.
While some organizations and leaders brazenly declared that sthey wanted no VC belonging to KP community, there were 'saner' ones who chose to say the same thing in much refined tone and tenor, substantiating of course it with 'ideology' of Prof Matoo, that warranted opposition to the move of his appointment. However, they were unequivocal and their approach was in unison in terms of the cause for bandh. To what extent the statements of some KP leaders remained successful in making a 'solidarity' cause with the organizers of Jammu bandh is too clear and needs no elucidation, but it has only stirred some 'debate and discussions' in different directions within the community.
Even if the community in general chose to remain silent over the issue for apparent reasons of certain 'sensitivities' associated with it, seen by observers as 'neutral' approach, but the statements by some leaders in support of the Jammu cause which has been followed by the protest today against the 'uttering' of these leaders only reflects a 'murky' scene. Notwithstanding the general stance of silence and neutrality, this goes on to reflect confusion and incohesiveness , rather sharp divides in public posturings of the 'leaders' of the community. This certainly doesn't augur well for the image of the community. It is for 'leaders' to ponder what 'role' they need to perform under situations like the recent one.
