5/5/2010 12:14:53 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 4: It is not only heaps of garbage but mushrooming of street vendors and other daily wagers running their business within the Jammu railway station premises who are posing a great danger to the life and property of passengers and tourists in the absence of any scrutiny.
Ironically, the government railway police and other agencies looking after the security needs of the Jammu railway station are mutely becoming partners in crime and are happy to count their share of cut money, these unlicensed vendors and daily wagers dole out to them to grease their palms.
Involvement of few railway authorities in the lucrative business cannot be completely ruled out looking at the way the business is flourishing each day and boasts of a turnover of more than 1-3 lakh each day.
A visit to the railway station premises is enough to expose the tall claims of the state police force as starting from selling cricket bats, fruit vendors, mobile eateries, items of daily use, tea stalls almost every thing is available but very few among them possess the license to do business from the railway authorities thus posing a great risk to the security needs of the passengers.
The condition is such that any one and every one is free to set his shop and start his business. No database is available or prepared by the police authorities in the form of photographs or proper papers of the street vendors to ensure only those who possess a proper license is working in the premises and it is not free for all.
According to rough estimates more than 100 street vendors have set their illegal shops inside the railway station premises and smoothly running their businesses right under the nose of security forces deployed to ensure security of the passengers.
Apart from security concerns these street vendors are a source of constant headache to visitors as for every thing available on their stalls, mobile carts they have set exorbitant price tag and indulge in looting of passengers, tourists without any check.
Inside reports revealed that almost all the illegal street vendors pay a token sum of money to beat constable so as to enable him to run his business smoothly and he in turn passes on the part money to his senior officers for remaining mute spectators and not doing enough as per the law to set the house in order.
