| Fierce gunbattles likely between Talibans and Pak troops | | | It is indeed a good news that Pakistan has shifted about one lakh troops from the border with India and deployed them in tribal areas bordering Afghanistan. It is an indication that Islamabad has no intention of kicking up border conflict with Delhi as Pakistan continues to be plagued by the activities of terroists, especially by the activists of lashkar-i-Toiba and the Talibans. The basic purpose of deploying one lakh troops in the tribal areas was to ensure that the Talibans and those belonging to the Al Qaeda did not succeed in sneaking into Pakistan after the NATO troops intensified their campaign against the terrorists in Kabul and its adjoining areas. It also indicates that Islamabad has accepted the US suggestion on giving teeth to the ongoing military crackdown on the terrorists hiding in north and south Waziristan. What seems to have upset Islamabad and Washington is the way chief of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan,Hakimullah Mehsud, considered dead in a US drone attack on Januray 14,has resurfaced.Hakimullah has threatened revenge attacks on major US cities.Though he has not said anything about his plan to target military and civilian installations in Pakistan it is believed that his men may feel encouraged for fighting a sustained battle against the Pakistani troops. It is in this context that Islamabad has ordered deployment of over one lakh troops in Waziristan, bordering Afghanistan.Reports indicate that fierce gunbattles will follow as the troops start combing oper ations in the tribal areas. With such a situation brewing up in Pakistan it was but natural for Islamabad to demonstrate "woo india"gestures. It is imperative for Pakistan to have cordial relations with India at this juncture. No doubt India has had never any extra-terrotorial ambition but it cannot remain a mute spectator if it was provoked by Islamabad's gameplan of exporting terrorism to the Indian states, including Jammu and Kashmir.Pakistan is in deep political, economic and security trouble and it continues to bank on support and aid from the US.In return of this heavy military and non-military aid the US authorities have managed to secure nod from Islamabad for enlarging American military bases in Pakistan.Apart from deploying additional over 40,000 NATO forces in Afghanistan Washington has started sending additional companies of forces, war machinery, fighter planes and drones to areas in Pakistan bordering Afghanistan. This implies that the US plans to carry out multidimensional attack on the Talibans not only in Afghanistan but in Pakistan. It is yet to be seen whether Islamabad and those agencies that have been aiding ad assisting militants, operating in Jammu and Kashmir, initiate measures required for checking infiltration of militants into the Indian territory.Islamabad cannot expect cordial ties with India if Islamabad's moves to befriend Delhi are not backed by adequate measures for preventing soil of Pakistan from being used to export terrorism to India.Islamabad cannot expect Delhi to sit silent if the level of infiltration shows an upward curve again. It is in the interests of Pakistan to cooperate with the US forces in eliminating top Taliban leadership, including Hakimullah Mehsud. The intelligence agencies, especially the ISI,in Pakistan have contacts with top Taliban leaders, including Mehsud and once they forward specific information about their hideouts and plans it could be easy for the US troops to pin them down.Once these extremists and reactionaries are tamed Pakistan could enjoy a much needed respite from suicide bombings which have killed several hundred civilians during the last six months.
