Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 4: Even as the drug and food control organisation (DFCO) claimed to have fined 343 persons for smoking at public places, a lot needs to be done to strictly enforce the Prohibition of Smoking Act in the state.
At almost every minibus stand or even in minibuses, people could be seen puffing cigarettes, much to the inconvenience of others. Official sources said the Prohibition of Smoking Act, which enforces the ban on smoking at public places, would now be strictly implemented.
It may be mentioned that puffing induced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease causes severe breathing difficulty and is termed the fourth leading killer worldwide. Sources said police cop Manzoor Mir was today caught by a senior civil officer while smoking at a public place in Srinagar and fined Rs 200.
343 persons had violated the Act in the past six months and were fined for smoking at public places, the sources added, saying the DFCO had collected a fine of Rs 41,000 from them. The DFCO inspected 4,759 public places during their drive. Smoking was banned at public places in J&K under section 4 of Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products ( prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, production supply and Distribution) Act 2003, which was notified by the state government on December 3, 2008.Officers of various government departments had been empowered to compound the offence which carried a fine of Rs 200.
Sources said the DFCO would be carrying out surprise checking at the main city crossings and minibus stops in the winter capital in the days to come.
