EARLY TIMES REPORT
PAHALGAM, May 5: Stressing on the need of creating conducive atmosphere for establishing lasting peace in the region, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti today demanded unconditional release of all political prisoners to engage them in the dialogue process.
Addressing a meeting of the card holders of her party at Aakard area in Pahalgam, Mehbooba cautioned that oppressive measures being adopted by the coalition regime to suppress aspirations and wishes of the people of Kashmir would prove counter productive. "The increasing alienation of the people of Jammu and Kashmir especially of the Valley is outcome of the strong arm strategy being adopted by the present dispensation to stifle voice of the people", she observed and suggested that instead of adopting such repressive means government should rather adopt holistic approach to address grievances of the people.
Recalling the healing touch policy which was propagated by the PDP led regime in the state, Mehbooba Mufti said that it was result of the reconciliatory polices of her party that peace as well as dignity and honour of the people was also restored in the state to larger extent.
"It is unfortunate that the present dispensation headed by National Conference has failed to carry forward the agenda of peace and reconciliation pioneered by the PDP", she lamented.
"What to say of further consolidating the reconciliatory and peace initiatives made by the PDP led government, this coalition regime has even reversed the whole process through its oppressive measures", she observed.
It is need of the hour that government should rejuvenate and vigorously pursue the peace process, she demanded and added that releasing of all political prisoners was must to create conducive atmosphere for restoring peoples' faith.
Ridiculing statements of National Conference leaders who have demanding dialogue with all sections of the society, she pointed out that on the one hand this party has been advocating talks while on the other government of this party putting all stake holders in the jails to gag voice of dissents.
Speaking on the occasion, former Minister and senior PDP leader Moulvi Iftikar Hussain Ansari said that need of the hour was to address political aspirations of the people by realizing the ground realities.
He demanded revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) to replace the present atmosphere of confrontation with trust.
Former Finance Minister Tariq Hamid Karra, in his address, expressed his deep concern at the rising instances of innocent killings in the state and observes that these incidents not only add to the large number of personal tragedies but it also have a negative fallout. Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Sartaz Madani, MLA Bijbehara and former Minister Abdul Rehman Veeri, MLA Pahalgam Rafi Ahmed Mir, former Minister and district president Pahalgam Peer Mohammad Hussain and MLC Nizam ud Din Khatana also addressed the meeting.
