Govt contemplating to lift water from Chenab: Dy CM

JAMMU, May 5: The government would explore the possibility of lifting water from River Chenab, as a long term measures, to meet the increasing requirement of potable water in the city of temples. In this regard, Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand, today issued instructions to the concerned departments and asked them to get on the job of drafting the blue prints for the project. Speaking at a joint meeting of officers of various departments convened to review their functioning, Dy CM said that the project would be submitted to Asian Development Bank for funding through Economic Reconstruction Agency.
He said considering the fast depletion of sources and increasing demand of potable water, a long term plan for overcoming this problem has become an impending need.
Referring to the preliminary project report formulated earlier, the Deputy Chief Minister asked the PHE Department to work in close coordination with ERA and provide all information gathered earlier on the proposed project. He also suggested for seeking the services of best consultants available nationally.
Deputy Chief Minister also reviewed the status of drinking water augmentation and other projects being executed by various departments, including Economic Reconstruction Agency, NBCC and UEED, besides the preparations made by the functionaries to ensure that people may not face any inconvenience on the account of essential services during the summer season.
Deputy Chief Minister also directed for checking idle parking of heavy Vehicles along BC road, Bus Stand and other areas and asked the traffic department authorities to ensure that there was no idle parking in these areas.
He asked the department to take measures to ensure that the operators should park their vehicles at Nagrota Bus Stand, where Government has already developed all types of facilities for them. He also asked JMC to ensure eviction of both temporary and concrete encroachments along the main markets.
Construction of multi- tier parking slots near Bus Stand and behind Civil Secretariat also came up for discussion about which the meeting was informed that the as per the norms set for developing such faculties, services of consultancies nominated by the Union government are being sought.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Revenue, Raman Bhalla underscored the need for taking concrete steps for ensuring adequate supply to the localities and areas facing shortage of potable water. He mentioned various such places, particularly in Gandhi Nagar constituency and suggested measures for overcoming the problem of water shortage.
He laid stress upon expediting the work on upcoming intake plant at Boria Filtration Plant and said that its commissioning would solve the problem of major localities of the area.
