| SPO arrested for molesting minor | | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 5: The Handwara police Wednesday effected arrest of a SPO accused of sexually assaulting a minor. The SPO was immediately dismissed and charged under section 354 Ranbir Penal Code (RPC). The erring SPO had been evading arrest for the past two days. Angry people from Kralgund, Handwara blocked Baramulla-Kupwara road Wednesday morning to protest failure of police to effect arrest of a SPO accused of sexually assaulting a minor. They were demanding arrest of an SPO accused of sexually assaulting a minor from Kralgund village. The blockade continued for more than 3 hours. Later the authorities rushed to the spot and assured stern action against the erring SPO. As soon as the protestors dispersed peacefully, the police raided a house in the neighbourhood and arrested the SPO. A case has already been registered in the concerned police station. The SPO was dismissed from service. Surjit Singh, one of the SPOs entrusted with the job of protecting Rawalpora, Langate, a village inhabited by Sikh community forced entry into the house of Ali Muhammad Gujree on May 3 and tried to molest his 6-year-old daughter. However, the minor raised an alarm. The villagers rushed to rescue her. The drunk SPO managed escape. A case was immediately registered by the MLA, Engineer Abdul Rashid. The police took the minor for medical examination to the concerned hospital where rape was ruled out. Expressing satisfaction over erring SPO’s arrest, the people demanded stern action against him. The police assured action under section 354 RPC against the accused.
