| Maj, soldier killed in Bandipore | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 5: In weeks of suffering fatal casualties of four soldiers, including a Major, in a major operation at Chinkipora in Sopore, Army has lost two soldiers, including a Major, in an encounter with militants at Chiitibandi village in Bandipore. Informed sources in north Kashmir told Early Times that troops of 7-Garhwal were on way to a particular residential house in Rather Mohalla of Chittibandi village when they were fiercely attacked by a group of heavily armed militants in an ambush at 2130 hours last night. Sources said that troops had launched the operation, carrying along some personnel of Police Post Argam, on the basis of a specific information that suggested presence of some militants at a hideout. In close vicinity of the identified hideout, troops came under a fierce attack from the militants in ambush. Major Yogindra Rajbar and Rifleman Uttam Singh got critically hit. Even as both were evacuated, rushed to Srinagar and admitted to 92 Base Hospital of Army, they breathed their last while under treatment. Spokesman at headquarters of 15 Corps, Lt Col J S Brar, confirmed the death of both the soldiers. “The officer was a resident of Dehradun and had been operating in the area for close to two years, wherein he maintained peace in his area, which is a known hub of militancy owing to its terrain. He is survived by his mother, a sister and a brother. His buddy, Rifleman Uttam Singh is survived by his wife and a two year old daughter”, Col Brar added. “The operation was still on till reports last came in. The area is mountainous and forested and it has been raining heavily in the last two days”, he said. However, informed sources in Bandipore said that all the militants, believed to be four to five in number, managed to escape. They said Police and Army were investigating whether the 7-Garhwal unit was accidentally attacked by the fleeing militants or the tip off was a trap to conveniently strike and kill the Major. |
