| 22 school vehicles seized, 800 challaned | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 6: Waking up from its deep slumber, the Traffic Police Department today launched an extensive drive against the violators and seized 22 school vehicles including autorickshaws and mini-buses ferrying students to and fro from their residences under various sections of Transport Act. Besides, the cops also challaned 800 vehicles and realized a fine to the tune of Rs 88,000 from offenders. The Early Times in its edition on May 4 had highlighted the dangers to the lives of school going children in packed auto rickshaws which, in brazen violation of norms, were ferrying 10 to 15 children in a single auto. Official reports said that the department in its day-long drive seized 22 school vehicles comprising auto rikashaws, vans, mini buses and buses for violating norms in the city. "The vehicles were seized on the charges of violation of traffic norms which included overloading, violation of permits etc. Besides seizure of school buses, Traffic police has also challaned 800 vehicles and realized fine upto Rs 88000 under various sections of Transport Act. On the directions of SSP Traffic Police, Zahid Manhas, the traffic cops held nakas at different routes of Jammu city and intercepted vehicles particularly those ferrying school children. Official sources informed that the vehicles of some reputed schools of Jammu city were seized and challaned. When contacted, Zahid Manhas said, "We launched an extensive day long exercise to book the offenders. We seized 22 school vehicles and challaned 800 other vehicles for violating traffic norms." He further said that Rs 88000 fine was also realized from the violators, adding that the drive would continue tomorrow to contain traffic violations.
