| 'No mercy for speechless' | | Seven dogs administered 'poison' in JU | |
ARTEEV SHARMA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 6: In a bizarre incident, six to seven dogs were reportedly found dead after having administered 'poison' secretly in Jammu University campus this morning. The bodies of dogs were noticed by the students near university dispensary and Department of Bio-Technology. The university authorities, however, feigned ignorance and denied of having not committed the heinous crime. Same was the verbatim that poured out from Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) that too, refused to take the onus of having done the crime. "Six to seven dogs were found dead as they were seemingly given poison either by the dispensary officials or Department of Bio-Technology this morning. The bodies remained there for two hours and later dogs were shifted secretly after the students expressed their resentment against the action," Tarun Sharma, a student of JU and an eyewitness told Early Times. A student of Bio-Technology, who wished not to be named, also confirmed the incident, saying the bodies were found outside the department this morning. "The bodies were shifted secretly by some unidentified persons," he maintained. Though the pointer of suspicion oscillated between the JU dispensary and Jammu Municipal Corporation having drugged the dogs, no confirm reports were surfaced and mystery of the incident remained veiled. Dr Manju Gupta, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), JU dispensary expressed her ignorance over the incident, saying she was not aware about it. "I am also a dog lover and there is no question of giving poison to dogs. It was learnt that the Department of Bio-Technology was complaining about the stray dogs few days back but we are not aware about today's incident," she said. Dr Vireshwar Sharma, Municipal Veterinary Officer (MVO) Jammu also denied of having launched anti-stray dogs drive in the university and said, "Only rabies-affected and dogs having skin problems are generally killed as we have stopped the dog poisoning in usual cases." "As far as the killing of six to seven dogs in Jammu University is concerned, we are not aware about the incident as we had not launched any drive against the stray dogs. It may be mentioned here that animal rights activists and other animal lovers had advocated the ban on killing of dogs. Even they had urged to stop catching dogs haphazardly and killing them secretly. Similarly, if the residents of Greater Kailash locality are to be believed, four dogs were also found dead yesterday in Lane number 8 and 9 after consuming 'poison' being sprinkled on eatables by the JMC officials. "Four dogs were found dead in the locality after they consumed poisonous substance which was sprinkled by the JMC safaikaramcharis in the drains. They should avoid such tactics to get rid of menace of stray dogs as killing is no solution to any problem," Ashwani, a resident of Greater Kailash said.
