PDP blames ruling coalition for poor flood control measures
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 6: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership has berated the National Conference led government for not having taken any flood control measures despite the fact that the ruling coalition had been informed in advance about the impending dangers of flood devastation in Bandipore and its adjoining areas.
PDP MLA from Bandipore, Nizam-ud-Din Bhat said that he had sounded the government about the impending flood threat but no preventive measures were taken during the last over one month.
He said that heavy rain during the last three days had flooded various chunks of land and inhabited areas in Bandipore and its adjoining areas.
Bhat said that for the last three days electricity and drinking water supply has been snapped in Bandipore and its adjoining areas because of floods.
Floods in the rivulets and nallahas had damaged the power transmission and drinking water system.Even the road connectivity programme has been hit hard.
He blamed the National Conference and Congress leaders for misleading the chief Minister and the senior bureaucrats by feeding them with wrong reports.
He alleged that initially the government has earmarked very paltry funds for flood control measures and whatever funds were available were not being spent properly.
The PDP leader wanted the government to hold a probe into the utilisation of funds earmarked for flood control measures.
Bhat said that the entire valley is prone to floods but it was surprising that the National Conference led government had slashed funds for the flood control sector.
MLA demanded that the government upgrade the flood control department in Bandipore sector and enhance the funds for carrying out flood control measures.
