Make proper use of river water: BJP chief
5/7/2010 11:26:24 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 7: The water flowing through different rivers in the state should be properly utilized. This was stated by Bharatiya Janata Party state President Shamsher Singh Manhas while addressing public meetings at Ramban and Batote during his "Mass Contact Campaign".
He said that there are a number of rivers flowing in valley as well as in Jammu province but unfortunately their waters have not been utilized properly today even after about 63 years of independence.
Manhas said that river Chenab, which flows along Ramban, has great potential of setting up of more hydro-electric projects, which can produce more electricity besides providing jobs to thousands of educated youth.
He said one such project in Chanderkote has ignored the locally available technically educated youth and preferred the outsiders for various posts there. He said our neighbouring state, Himachal Pradesh is the live example how it has worked towards setting up of hydro-electric projects.
Manhas said that the people living in hilly and remote areas of the state, Jammu province in particular, are still devoid of regular supply of electricity, clean drinking water, adequate health, transport and educational facilities. There are a large number of villages with poor road and communication connectivity. But the government makes high claims of recorded breaking developmental activities, which is a white lie.
BJP Chief advised the State's NC-Congress coalition to focus its attention on alternate job avenues for the over ten lakh educated unemployed youth. He said the government has itself claimed that the number of educated unemployed youth in the state is around 5 lakh, but in reality it is about ten lakh and the number is increasing with the each passing year. He expressed grave concern over the failure of the government to work towards promotion of various such sectors which can provide jobs to the unemployed youth. He said besides setting up of hydro-electric projects, sectors like tourism, agriculture and horticulture should be promoted, which can prove to be great sources of employment.
A number of BJP leaders including Som Raj Khajuria, Sham Singh Katoch, Rajinder Singh, Ram Kumar Gupta, Ramesh Sharma, Rashpal Singh, Kuldeep Kumar Gupta, Raja Riaz Ahmed, Basant Raj and Jagdish Kumar also addressed these public meetings.
