| IT IS HIGH TIME OMAR NEED TO CONSOLIDATE | | | Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, currently missing in action on account of much needed break, will soon return to occupy the hot seat with the opening of the 'Durbar move' offices here in the state's summer capital in Srinagar on Monday. With this Omar, who had spent an eventful six months here in Jammu and waded through rough weather, is expected to begin afresh with much needed vigour and renewed enthusiasm. Even though escalating tensions between the alliance partners -- National Conference and the Congress party --and spirited attempts made by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to unsettle him will remain at the back of his mind, but his response to emerging political and law and order situation especially in the Kashmir valley would determine health of the coalition government in the long run. By announcing their month long schedule of protest demonstrations and public awareness campaigns--with a clear cut focus on the issue of resolution of Kashmir issue-- PDP, flagging slogan of self-rule- has sought to dictate their own agenda to the coalition government headed by Omar. Amid all this hullabaloo a pertinent question, "How will Omar hit back and consolidate his position to silence his critics and detractors within the coalition has assumed far greater significance? Will he be relying more on his experienced father and National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah to make use of his good offices and help him steer clear of the rough patches or will he be relying more on the blessings of 10 Janpath with extra push from his close friend and Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi. At the same time anti-government campaign unleashed by the main opposition party and by the separatists to channelize public anger against his government would test his 'political acumen' and 'maturity quotient'. It would be interesting to see how Omar would do the balancing act to satisfy 'bruised' ego's of disgruntled Congressmen and check the growing feeling of regional divide in the council of ministers.Omar’s swift response to the emerging political and law and order situation in the Kashmir valley would determine the success of his coalition government and would surely help him consolidate gains by way of implementing his agenda of growth in all the three regions of the state with liberal help from the union government. It is high time for Omar to consolidate his gains and establish his stamp of authority.
